When you see a lei you see Hawaii, you feel the warmth of Aloha, and you smell the fragrance of the islands. Leis are everywhere in the islands, and they are such a part of the Hawaiian experience. Leis are exchanged as a greeting and a sign of love and acceptance. For couples getting married in Hawaii, the lei exchange is part of the ceremony that they will never forget. For the wedding ceremony we do the lei exchange first, and then the vow exchange and finally the ring exchange. Leis are made with a variety of Hawaiian flowers, nuts, berries, shells, feathers, and leaves. Leis and can be very simple or very complex. You can never have too many flowers in Hawaii. Both bride and groom are adorned with a lei. Traditionally, all guests are to receive a lei upon attendance. Special leis are usually provided for parents and grandparents attending this special occasion.
Lei Etiquette… so to speak: Leis are given with a kiss to each cheek and it is considered rude to remove the lei in front of the person that gave it to you. If you receive a lei from someone special you are to never share that lei with someone else. You should never refuse a lei. Leis are not meant to be worn like a necklace. The proper way to wear a lei is gently draped over the shoulders, hanging down the back and the front equally.
